On the cultivation of the Elbe River
The Elbe River brings life to Dvůr Králové nad Labem. The aim of the flood protection project is therefore not only to safeguard the city against floodwaters, but above all to strengthen the relationship between the urban structure, the inhabitants, and the watercourse. The urban design sensitively responds to the distinct character of both banks and restores the riverfront's recreational and ecological value. The right bank is perceived as an urbanized and more confined space of the city embankment, where the flood protection measure becomes an integral part of the architecture. By contrast, the left bank offers a more relaxed, nature-oriented environment with generous conditions for recreational use and ecological revitalization.
The landscape design constitutes one of the cornerstones of the entire project and approaches each bank with regard to its specific characteristics. On the right bank, we work with the historic tree avenue as a significant element and anticipate its gradual renewal. In the northern part of the territory, a new biotope is proposed to support local biodiversity, while the central section is complemented by a second tree row thanks to the jagged alignment. Beyond the J. Opletal Bridge, the flood protection measures enter a more open landscape and take on a more nature-oriented character.
The more spacious conditions of the left bank allow for more significant interventions in the bank treatment. The main intervention is concentrated in the central section, focusing on the complete revitalization of the park between the J. Palach Bridge and the athletic stadium. The second significant intervention is the modification of the bank near the JUTA complex, where the original stone riverbank reinforcement is being removed. The entire concept in this section aims toward nature-based measures, through which local residents will gain direct physical access to the very water's edge of the Elbe.
